Husqvarna 450 Chainsaw Review

Husqvarna 450 Chainsaw 18-Inch 50.2cc Gas Powered

Husqvarna are known for some of the best chainsaw design these days. They definitely know how to build a good chainsaw and the 450 is no different.

husqvarna 450 chainsawEngine:

The saw is equipped with Husqvarnas ‘Xtorq’ engine design. This is a system Husky have developed for 2 stroke engines which is supposed to result in a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and a 75% reduction in emissions. It is a 50cc engine so offers plenty of power for a saw this size.

Husky make some of the best chainsaw features for comfort. Like the rest of their range they have incorporated an ergonomic rear handle design as well as vibration dampers which will make a big difference to your fatigue levels over extended periods of use.

As you would expect from any modern saw, the Husqvarna 450 chainsaw comes with an inertia activated chain brake which stops the chain in the event of kickback.  Its light weight (11.33 pounds) makes it easy to handle and reduces fatigue.husqvarna 450 chainsaw

Other Features:

The Husqvarna 450 Chainsaw comes with felling marks molded into the casing. These aid precision when felling and though a really simple feature, it’s a clever one that works well.

As you probably know, starting can be a real pain on some chainsaws and this can really ruin an otherwise good saw. Fortunately Husqvarna have developed an ingenious air bleed system which purges the air from the carburetor on startup, meaning it gets a suitably rich mixture to fire it up which then returns to normal during operation.

husqvarna 450 chainsawAnother useful innovation on the Husqvarna 450 chainsaw is the easy access cylinder cover, which allows you to quickly change the spark plug on the job should it be necessary.

Conclusion: This is a great all round chainsaw that would suit anyone from domestic yard keepers who want a quality saw to professionals needing a backup chainsaw. The Husqvarna 450 chainsaw is light enough to be very comfortable to use. It has everything you will need to stay safe and the extra features are well though out.

Cordless Chainsaw Reviews

Electric chainsaws have many advantages such as no dangerous/ smelly gas to mess about with, cheaper running and they require less maintenance. However they are restricted by a cord which can limit their use considerably. Fortunately it is now possible to buy  a decent cordless chainsaw which solves this problem. Amazon has some of the best prices on cordless chainsaws HERE.

Read on for a review of two of the best..

Black & Decker CCS818 18-Volt Cordless Chainsaw

First up we have the Black and Decker ccs818 cordless chainsaw. This saw has received rave reviews on Amazon thanks to its excellent build quality and ease of use.

It runs from a single rechargeable 18v battery which is included along with a charger, run time is only about 30 minutes though so it is probably worth investing in a couple of battery packs.

As you would expect from a saw with an 8″ bar, this cordless chainsaw is great for pruning and light limbing tasks, it’s not really cordless chainsaw b&dpowerful enough for much more than that. If you need to do much in the way of felling, you will need something with a bit more grunt. This saw is great at what it does though and if you just need it for light garden tasks it is ideal!

Key features:

  • 8″ bar
  • Push button start
  • Universal battery pack (works with many other B&D tools)
  • Auto oiling system with oil level window

Oregon PowerNow 14-Inch 40-Volt Max Lithium-Ion Chain Saw

If you need something with a bit more guts that doesn’t have the hassle of gas or the restrictions of a power cord, I may have found the answer! This 40v cordless chainsaw delivers 2350 rpm max chain speed (that’s a lot for a cordless chainsaw!)
It features a 14″ bar, weighs just 9.3 lbs and  according to the documentation the battery will last up to 250 cuts on 2-3″ branches. A nice feature is that the battery, instead of fading gradually as it runs out, stops suddenly so you can keep using it right up to the last minute.

Another really exciting feature is the PowerSharp system- a built in device for sharpening the chain at the touch of a button! As with any cordless chainsaw, it is worth investing in more than one battery so you don’t get stuck without power half way through a job.

Conclusion: This is a serious saw that can hold its own against some gas powered models! With the wide range of innovative features (that actually work) and it’s light weight and remarkable power it is a good choice for anyone who needs a quality oregoncordless chainsaw and probably would surprise a few diehard gasoline saw users.

Key features:

  • 14″ bar
  • 9.3 lbs weight
  • Chain brake and low kickback chain and bar
  • Auto lube system
  • Built in chain sharpener

Considering an Electric Chainsaw?

The electric chainsaw is no longer the underpowered lemon it once was! In fact an electric chainsaw offers a number of advantages over its gasoline powered counterpart. These include:

  • No smell- Gasoline is smelly and dangerous to handle.
  • Less noisy- no engine means a much quieter saw.
  • Lighter and more nimble.
  • Usually considerably cheaper.
  • Less maintenance- a gasoline powered chainsaw will require engine servicing including spark plug and air filter changes. With an electric chainsaw you will need to maintain the chain and that’s about it.
  • More convenient for occasional users as you don’t have to drain the gas tank.

It is true that most electric saws don’t quite match the power of a gas saw but many are not far off. Generally you will be restricted to the range of the power cord although it is now possible to buy an excellent rechargeable cordless chainsaw which does away with that problem. For the occasional user and the non professional wood cutter, an electric chainsaw is a great option.

Electric Chainsaw Reviews

This article will look at a few of the best and most popular electric chainsaws available in order of price..

Remington RM1415A 14-Inch 8-Amp Electric Chain Saw

The RM1415A is a lightweight chainsaw (6.25lbs) with a 14″ bar. It is in the lower price bracket for electric chainsaws but still offers good reliable performance.

It is very compact and easy to use and requires no maintenance other than sharpening the chain and keeping it oiled. It does come with an automatic chain oiler although looking at a number of customer reviews reveals that this component frequently leaks so most people just manually oil the chain every few cuts.  It features a low kickback bar and chain.

This is a great simple, no frills electric chainsaw that should last a good few years. It is perfect for those who do mostly light branch and shrub trimming and don’t want to spend a huge amount on a electric chainsaw remington

  • 14″ bar
  • Low kickback bar and chain
  • 8amp/1.5 peak hp motor
  • 6.25lbs weight

WORX WG303.1 16-Inch Chain Saw, 3.5 HP 14.5 Amp

The WORX WG303 electric chainsaw is a bit more powerful than the Remington. It has a 3.5 hp power output which is comparable to a low power gas chainsaw. It has a few more high tech features as well including an effective auto chain tensioning system that uses a single knob to maintain proper tension and an automatic oiling mechanism with a oil level indicator. It also features an inbuilt chainbrake should kickback occur.

This saw is very versatile and well built. It should last you a long time and tackle most light to medium jobs. It is comfortable to use as well having ergonomic molded hand grips and an anti vibration system in the handle.

This is the perfect electric chainsaw for someone who needs a versatile saw that can cope with everything from limbing to medium/heavy cutting.electric chainsaw worx

Makita UC4030A Commercial-Grade 16-Inch 14.5 amp Electric Chainsaw

Makita make some of the best power tools on the market so it’s nice to see they have extended their range to chainsaws as well. As you would expect, the UC4030A 16″ Electric Chainsaw is a professional quality product aimed at people who are serious about logging and need a high performing saw.

Among the professional features are a current limiter that protects the motor from being burn out should you overload the saw- a very real problem in electric chainsaws. It has a 16″ bar coupled with a 14.5 amp motor and should be able to handle whatever you need to cut.

As with all Makita products this is a superior bit of kit from the ergonomically molded grips to the electric chain brake and double insulated electrics. This is the best of the bunch by a long shot. It is definitely more expensive and while the other two here are very good saws, if you need a serious electric saw, this is the one to go for. makita electric chainsaw

Chainsaw Buying Guide

With the massive range of chainsaws available nowadays, it is not a simple task to choose the right one. Much has been improved in chainsaw design since they were first invented almost 100 years ago and there is now a different saw for every

One of the first one man chainsaws in action.

woodcutting application imaginable. Hopefully this chainsaw buying guide will help you to make the right choice. If you know exactly what you’re after then feel free to browse the site and read reviews of the best chainsaws or shop for the best priced chainsaws HERE.

What Will I be Using the Chainsaw for?

Are you buying a chainsaw to fell large trees and Hardwood? If so you will probably require a large and powerful chainsaw. Similarly if you are using the saw to cut softer wood, felling small timber and pruning, a smaller saw with a shorter guide bar will likely be adequate.

I probably should have started the chainsaw buying guide with this but safety is absolutely the MOST important thing when it comes to choosing a chainsaw. Chainsaws are not sympathetic to flesh and bone any more than they are to timber and you must be certain you are able to control the saw BEFORE you start using it.

There are a number of safety features on most chainsaws nowadays;

  • Chain Brake. This is probably the single greatest improvement in chainsaw safety. In the event of kickback your forward hand will hit a guard that stops the chain instantly.
  • Chain Catcher. If the chain should break this will catch it and reduce the risk of injury.
  • Easy to access stop control. A button that will stop the chainsaw in an emergency. The button must be easy to operate with one hand.
  • Chain and Bar design. This plays a huge role in reducing kickback. As kickback occurs when the tip of the saw strikes something hard, the smaller the radius of the tip the less the chances of kickback.

Ultimately, user training is the most vital part of chainsaw safety. If you are inexperienced, take a course! Do not try to use a saw that is too large or heavy for you to control.

 What Size of Saw?

This is largely determined by the size of trees you will be cutting of course. Chainsaw size is measured in terms of engine displacement and guide bar length. Generally a recreational chainsaw i.e; not a professional/ industrial one will be under 50cc. Bar length is a very important consideration; a saw with a shorter bar will be easier to control than a longer one as it is significantly lighter. Bar length varies from about 10″ to over 30″ For most homeowner/ recreational saws 20″ is large enough.

How Often Will I be Using the Saw?

For occasional firewood chopping and general recreational use, a modest bar length of around 16-20 inches should be adequate. For these purposes an engine size of 50cc or less will be appropriate.  Something like this Poulan Pro 16-Inch 35cc Gas-Powered Chain Saw would fit the bill for the average domestic user.chainsaw buying guide

If however you are going to be felling large timber on a regular basis, cutting hardwood and spending a lot of time using the saw, you may want a longer chainsaw buying guidebar and a greater engine capacity. It will be worth investing in a saw with a bit more grunt. The Echo CS-600P 20″ gas chainsaw would be ideal.

For professional use you will want a high performance saw with all the appropriate features. Professional fellers etc. are likely to be using their saws a lot and as such require the most ergonomically designed saws. Features like heated handles may be useful chainsaw buying guide makitafor these users, particularly if the saw is going to be used in winter.  For professional use it will likely be necessary to have access to a range of chainsaws for different applications. For all round use, something like the Makita DCS460-18 Commercial Grade 18-Inch 46cc would be perfect.

For limbing and small cutting tasks, something similar to the Poulan P3314 14-Inch 33cc chainsaw would be perfect as it is light and nimble making it easy to control.  chainsaw buying guide

How Experienced am I?

This is a very important consideration. I strongly recommend against buying a large capacity saw with a very large bar for your first chainsaw. A smaller chainsaw will be more maneuverable and much easier for a beginner to use. A big saw will have more space between the handles and the longer bar will make the front of the saw more heavy. If you are inexperienced, apart from anything else, you will find a large chainsaw will tire you quickly which is dangerous.

Gas or Electric?

Once upon a time gas powered chainsaws were the only option for any serious logger. That has changed a lot though and now most of the big names in chainsaw manufacture offer powerful electric saws alongside their gas powered range. Ultimately gas is always going to be more powerful so for professional use, that’s the way to go. There are pros and cons on both sides though..

Electric Chainsaws (pros)

  • Cheaper (usually)
  • Quieter
  • Better for occasional use as you don’t have to drain gas when not in use for a while.
  • Lighter and easier to control
  • No smoke

Electric Chainsaws (cons)

  • Less powerful than gas
  • You have to plug it in so you are restricted in where you go
  • Sluggish in cold weather

Gas Chainsaws (pros)

  • Powerful
  • Take it anywhere
  • Not affected by temperature
  • More reliable (usually)

Gas Chainsaws (cons)

  • Heavier
  • Noisy
  • Smelly
  • Smoky

So, as you can see neither is better than the other, they simply have different applications.  If you need to take the saw to places without a power source you will have to opt for gas. It may be worth considering electric if it is to be used occasionally in your yard though.  You can find my review of the best electric chainsaws HERE.

I think that pretty much covers the chainsaw buying guide. I hope it has helped you decide what saw you need.. Happy chopping!

What is the Best Chainsaw for the Job?

There are so many chainsaws available these days, for such a wide range of applications, I felt it would be useful to look at the best chainsaw for some of the most common applications. Of course it would be impossible to review all the chainsaws for sale but I have selected those that are commonly used and manufactured by reliable brands.

I have kept this page specific to gas powered chainsaws as they are still the most commonly used, for information on the best electric chainsaw go HERE.

Also, these are all aimed at the domestic user although there are some pretty serious saws here. The Husqvarnas in particular are verging on being pro saws.

Whats the Best Chainsaw for Large Tree Felling?

For large tree felling, the best chainsaw you can have is one with a powerful engine and a large bar. I have chosen the Husqvarna 460 Rancher 20-Inch 60.3cc for this application because although it has a 20″ bar, you can always fit a bigger one, but most importantly it packs a big punch. If you consider that you can cut nearly double the length of your bar, this should be plenty big best chainsaw for large fellingenough.

Key Features:

  • Air injection cleaning system means longer service intervals
  • Smart start system makes it easier to start and harder to flood
  • Chain catcher and inertia activated chain brake for safety
  • 60.33cc (3.62hp)
  • X-torq engine reduces fuel consumption and emissions

All in all this is a very tough yet surprisingly nimble chainsaw with many professional features. It is ideal for experienced domestic users who need the best chainsaw they can get for larger applications. The cheapest price I have found it is on Amazon and it also comes with their free shipping and 30 day returns policy! Get it HERE.

Whats the Best Chainsaw for Limbing?

For limbing you will need a small, light saw that is easily maneuverable. Lower power is preferred for this application and a shorter bar will make the job much easier.  The Poulan P3314 14-Inch 33cc chainsaw is a great choice here with its 14″ inch bar and lightweight construction.chainsaw buying guide

  • Primer bulb for easy starting
  • Inertia activated chain brake
  • Super Clean air filtering design for longer service intervals.

Overall this is a lot of chainsaw for the money. It may not have some of the professional features as the Husky models but for light applications like limbing it has everything you need. It’s roughly a third of the price of an equivalent Husqvarna model and is much more than a third of the quality! An excellent limbing chainsaw! Find the best prices on the Poulan P3314.

*Note- this saw is not CARB compliant which means you won’t be able to purchase it in California.

Whats the Best Chainsaw for Beginners?

It’s a difficult task to choose a beginners saw since it really depends on what your intentions are. Some feel you should buy a small cheap saw to start with and invest in something more serious when you ‘re ready. If you are just planning to do a few small tasks with it now and again this may be good advice. I’m going to assume that you are new to chainsaws but will be using them regularly for a wide range of tasks chainsaw for beginners

In this case, I think it is beneficial to get the best saw you can afford. This will give you a feel for what it’s like to use a ‘proper’ saw, should you wish to buy a large saw later and the higher quality saws often have slightly more advanced safety features. The Husqvarna 435 16-Inch 40.9cc chainsaw fits the bill perfectly! Key features:

  • 16″ bar. Ideal for beginners
  • X-torq engine design reduces emissions and fuel consumption
  • Felling marks on casing- helpful for beginners (and everyone else!)

husky engine best chainsawThis may be the best chainsaw for those just starting out in the world of chainsaws but would be equally good for more experienced users who need a smaller capacity saw. Overall the user reviews seem more positive than those for the similar Husqvarna 440E so this would be my choice. It will quickly give a beginner a feel for a high end piece of equipment with many pro features. One thing to note is that this saw is not CARB compliant so is not available for sale in California. If you are in California I recommend the 440E which has similar specs but is CARB compliant. Both the 435 and the 440E are available for the best price at Amazon.

Whats the Best Chainsaw for Those on a Budget?

For many of us the cost is the ultimate deciding factor. Whilst it would be nice to have the best chainsaw available, a low budget does not mean you have to settle for  poor quality equipment these days. There are a range of low- mid priced saws that can cover all your needs. One such saw is the Green Machine GM10516 38cc chainsaw.

This saw comes with a 16″ bar which is adequate for most small- medium tasks but if you want something bigger you could easily swap it up to a 18″ bar to increase its versatility without making a big difference to the power. You could probably even go up to 20″ with a 38cc engine. Features: best chainsaw for those on a budget

  • Spring assisted starting system
  • Automatic chain oiler
  • Inertia activated chain brake reduces risk of injury in the event of kickback and safe-t tip reduces the risk of kickback occurring.

This is the best chainsaw to buy if you are watching your cash in my opinion. It has plenty of power and is well balanced. It may not have all the features of a Stihl or a Husqvarna but for a quarter of the price you really can’t complain.  Amazon have it on sale for an amazing price which you can find HERE.

Whats the Best All Rounder?

If you want a saw that can cover all the bases and handle whatever you throw at it you really can’t go wrong with the Husqvarna 450 18-Inch 50.2cc chainsaw. It is small and maneuverable enough for light work whilst still having more than enough power to cope with heavy felling and hardwood. As you would expect it boasts Husqvarnas excellent build quality and the superb features you find on all their saws including:husky18

  • Lowvib anti vibration system which very effectively reduces vibration
  • X-torq engine
  • Their inertia activated chain brake design
  • Snap lock cylinder cover for easy maintainance

This saw is chock- full of innovations and neat features but at the heart of it is a powerful- semi professional machine that can handle whatever you throw at it. This is definitely the best chainsaw for anyone needing a versatile piece of equipment.

I have written a full, in depth review on the Husqvarna 450 HERE.

Once again the best price I have found for this saw is at Amazon and you can read reviews on it and purchase HERE.
